It is hard. I live in a world that pushes me to consume. And, I tend to overdo it. Not because I need it, or because I want it. But, because I am constantly told to do so. Last year I decided I wanted to buy more sustainable and ethical from organic clothing brands. This why I contacted Organic Basics, a brand focusing on ethical production that would provide me with sustainable and ethical underwear.
Did you know that the fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the World? And it was really hard to accept. I like shopping, I love “feeling” good, I love buying things that make me feel like I can express my crazy personality.
But, the UN states that the fashion industry consumes more energy than the aviation and shipping industry combined. To tell the truth, that was a hard fact to accept for me. Sometimes I feel like I would like to care a bit less or, maybe, even not know about these topics. But that feeling never lasts long as I have the spirit of a little rebel. Instead, I try to fix things by facing them rather than avoiding them.
Ethical underwear: choose the planet.
Again, fast fashion has a huge negative impact on our environment. From water pollution to microfibres in our ocean or rainforest destruction, this industry is not taking such actions. Not only it is bad for the planet, but for the people too. This is why I try to educate myself on the matter to learn how to contribute in a more positive way.
On the positive side, educating myself gave me a new perspective on how my choices are impacting the world and the people around me. Actually, I felt more empowered and empathetic because of my curiosity and eagerness to learn. I know for a fact that my choices make a difference. I also know that if I want to see a change, I will have to walk the talk.
In the long run, choosing ethical and organic products is not more expensive. Buying things over and over is more expensive. I used to buy so many more things from fast fashion brands like H&M, ASOS or, Zara. Fast fashion makes you feel outdated after a couple of months, that’s how they get you buying more of the same. You do not buy by season anymore (summer, winter,…) but because you don’t feel “in” anymore. Therefore, I now buy more classic items (usually ethical brands go for classic styles) and I pair them with fun and unique accessories.
Organic Basics: Design to last.
When receiving my package from Organic Basics I was not expecting to actually feel a difference right away. I thought I would see a difference after a few months when seeing how good the products looked, still. So, when my Organic Basics t-shirt wrapped my body I was completely sold.
So many brands out there claim to “choose life” or only use “organic cotton”. This is marketing, most of these collections are not fully sustainable and use buzz words as greenwashing. Brands want you to feel less guilty to buy cheap, and a lot so they use strategies like green labels and fake concepts like “choose life”. This hurts my soul, especially when I learn that the same brand is using modern slavery in their factories…
And, this is where Organic Basics is different. They include, in their sustainability initiative, both the environmental and human side. And, the quality of their ethical underwear line is way superior to anything you could hold in shops like Zara or H&M. When wearing the t-shirt you really understand how cotton is supposed to feel. I couldn’t believe it and told Rapha many times “wow can you feel that?”.

I have a very complicated relationship with my skin. When I finally found cotton underwear for sensitive skin I was happily surprised. Organic Basics are made out of GOTS certified organic cotton which is why you can feel the difference right way and, why you can trust that their products are following a set of rules from production to packaging, that meat your values.
Cotton underwear for sensitive skin.
Why is it important to me? Not only I was looking for affordable organic clothing, but also for something comfortable to my skin. I have rosacea which means that any wrong material or chemical on my face can be provocating inflammations. Also, my skin feels itchy and irritated all the time after a hot shower (I live in Sweden so you can imagine). Therefore, finding organic cotton underwear in Organic Basics was a real change for me.
In fact, a bit more than a year ago I decided to become plant-based to shift treat the planet, and my body, better. I knew that my body was my best friend and, I wanted to treat like it deserved to be treated. So, I stopped eating meat and animal products. I switched a lot (not everything I admit) of my products to most natural and organic ones. Moreover, I replace my creams and face products by natural oils like rosehip and coconut. And, my skin is very grateful for these changes!
Organic Basics and buying ethical underwear was our next step. After donating a lot of my old clothes to second-hand shops and organizations I decided to buy less, but better. And that’s when I discovered this ethical underwear and cloth brand. I was really curious about how they managed to be so successful so I decided to contact them. Eventually, I got in touch with Larisa the influencer and affiliate coordinator at Organic Basics. Here is the article about our little chat, if you are curious about the brand.
Influencers for good:
Despite the number of opportunities we got to work with non-sustainable brands who offered us money or products, Raphael and I never agreed to do it (read our values here). We always refused to promote things like black Friday or brand that were not cruelty-free for example. And it kind of hurts when we have to say no because we would love to engage with these brands and understand why they wouldn’t make better changes.
In all honesty, we understand why some people accept to do it but we believe that it is important for each one of us to try to do better. We believe being an “influencer” (a term I personally hate) comes with responsibilities. But you guys are interested, you are eager to learn alongside us. And, we need to use that powerful audience to promote better alternatives to the mainstream ones we have.
Our dream in the future is to find this community of people that share the same values and refuse to accept products and money to promote brands that are harmful to the planet. In the meantime, we will do this ourselves as we believe that good energy attracts good people. We are confident about it.
I hope you liked this blog post and, I would love to know more about what you think about sustainability and initiatives such as this one.
